Symmetry in Sura al-Yasin
I have discovered a chiastic structure in Sura al-Yasin (the “heart of the Qur’an”).
Here is my rhetorical analysis:
Here are some key correspondences: E and E’ (36:12 and 36:79), F and F’ (36:13 and 36:78), I and I’ (36:23 and 36:74-75), L and L’ (36:26-27 and 36:64), N and N’ (36:30-31 and 36:60-62), P and P’ (36:35 and 36:57), Q and Q’ (36:36 and 36:56), and S and S’ (36:38 and 36:52).
Note that the middle section (section V) is a quotation, and Dr. Michel Cuypers (a non-Muslim scholar) has found that the centers of Qur’anic chiastic structures are often quotations. Furthermore, this middle section of Sura al-Yasin mirrors the middle section (section E) of Ayat al-Kursi’s chiastic structure.
